5 DIY Ways to Remove Sweat Stains from Clothes

Sweat stains on our clothes tend to be caused by deodorant, detergent or clothes washing soap.

White or black clothes are the most difficult to remove these stains from, because they show them up most.

DIY Recipes to Remove Sweat Stains

The yellowy color that forms on white blouses and shirts is truly unpleasant and is very difficult to get rid of.

1. Recent stain

Ingredients:

  • 5 tbsp. of sodium bicarbonate (45 g)
  • 4 cups of water (1 liter)

What do you need to do?

  • If the stain is recent, dissolve 5 tablespoons of baking soda in a liter of water.
  • Leave the item of clothing to soak for 30 minutes and then wash normally.
  • When you wash it, try to add a little bit of extra soap in the area of the stain.

2. Remove the sweat stains with fine salt

Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp. of fine salt (45 g)
  • water (as much as needed)

What should you do?

  • Take the item of clothing and, with the help of a sponge or cloth, wet the stained area with tepid (nearly cold), clean water.
  • Put the tablespoons of fine salt onto the stains and leave it to act for 30 to 40 minutes.
  • After this time, rinse with tap water and wash the item normally.

3. Get rid of sweat stains with liquid detergent

What should you do?

  • To get rid of sweat stains and bleach the item of clothing, it is advisable to apply liquid detergent and put it in the sun.
  • First soak the item in tepid water, then pour liquid detergent directly onto the stains and wet the area with water.
  • Put the item in the sun, and after an hour wash the item with water, rinse well and dry.

4. Get rid of sweat stains from colored clothing with vinegar

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbsp. of white vinegar (60 ml)
  • 2 cups of water (500 ml)

What should you do?

  • For colored items of clothing, white vinegar is recommended.
  • Dilute the white vinegar in two cups of water.
  • Pour the mixture onto the sweat stain and leave it to act for half an hour.
  • To finish, wash the garment with cold water.

5. Remove sweat stains with lemon juice

Ingredients:

  • juice of 1 to 2 lemons
  • 1 tbsp. of fine salt (15 g)

What should you do?

  • Apply the lemon juice directly to the sweat stains until the area is wet.
  • Then add the fine salt to the stain, while it is still wet.
  • Rub the clothing with your hands until the stains disappear.
  • Finally, leave it to dry in the sun before washing as usual.

Advice for avoiding sweat stains on clothing

Sweat stains appear due to a reaction between the anti-antiperspirants and the salts present in sweat.

These stains usually appear in the day, but some people who sweat a lot at night also leave stains on their pajamas and bed sheets.

  • It is important to choose the right kind of fabric depending on the temperature. Cotton is the best option for hot days, as well as wearing loose and sleeveless garments to avoid permanent wetness in the area.
  • We should check which deodorant we use. Some contain aluminum which, when it comes into contact with sweat, forms yellow stains that are very hard to remove.
  • Choosing transparent, neutral deodorant is highly advisable, and is also better for the skin.

Deodorants with fragrance generally contain a base of aldehyde or ketone, chemicals which can react with other components and create yellow stains that are hard to remove.

  • Act as soon as the stains appear without letting them dry because it is much harder to remove them afterwards.
  • Wait until the deodorant dries on your armpits before putting your clothes on, because excess deodorant stains the clothes.
  • You can opt for natural products like bicarbonate of soda. Apply a layer straight onto your armpits after washing.

This product neutralizes the acids generated by the bacteria that feed off sweat and release an unpleasant odor.

Natural products to prevent sweat stains

All the above-mentioned formulas are made with natural products.

Although there are chemical products available on the market to remove sweat stains from clothing, specific to each fabric, natural products are the best option.

By not using chemicals, they don’t cause any skin problems, nor allergies or other unpleasant reactions.
