What Is Anxiety?

Have you ever felt nervous, feared and worried about something? We guess the answer is definitely yes since there is probably no one that has never felt like that.

Anxiety is a common condition that people experience from time to time. However, in some cases, this condition can overwhelm people so that they are unable to have a happy life. Anxiety can appear in several types:

1. Panic Disorder – People who suffer from this type of anxiety, experience sudden and repeated feelings of terror. Such feelings usually appear with no warning.

2. Social Anxiety Disorder – this condition is also known as social phobia. Self-consciousness and overwhelming worry about everyday situations are typical characteristics of this type.

3. Specific Phobias – these phobias or fears relate to some specific situation or object. For example, fear of enclosed spaces, fear of snakes, fear of heights, etc.

4. Generalized Anxiety Disorder – Although there is no particular reason to worry, people who suffer from this type of anxiety feel excessive and unrealistic worry and tension about a certain thing.

The exact reasons for the onset of anxiety disorders are still analyzed, but it is believed that anxiety is a result of different factors such as environmental stress and changes in the brain.

According to studies, stress on a long-term basis can damage the way the nerve cells transmit information within the brain. Other studies show that anxiety causes some changes in the brain structures that control memories. Also, some trauma can lead to some anxiety disorder.

The Potent Anti-Anxiety Vitamin

Although there are many ways, people can treat anxiety such as relaxation therapy, counseling, lifestyle and dietary changes they tend to use prescription medicines.

According to a current research, an anxiety disorder can result from a deficiency of an important vitamin.

One such vitamin is Niacin or the well-known Vitamin B3. This is water-soluble vitamin from the group of B-complex vitamins. This vitamin is crucial for the synthesis of steroidal hormones, DNA repair, and energy metabolism.

It causes vasodilation or widening of the blood vessels. This vitamin relaxes the cells within the vessel walls thus increasing the blood flow and reducing the blood pressure. It also improves the cardiovascular health by increasing the HDL level and reducing the LDL levels.

In the case of anxiety, Niacin acts as anti-anxiety vitamin, it serves as an antidote to adrenaline, the over-produced hormone in people with anxiety.

According to some researchers, Vitamin B3 or niacin can improve the sleep quality thus reducing depression and anxiety. The book Biochemical, Physiological and Molecular Aspects of Human Nutrition, states that niacin can reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow, regulate hormones, reduce high levels of adrenaline and eliminate stress.

You would probably ask how much niacin you need in order to feel less anxious. The recommended daily dose depends on the gender and age. So, make sure you consult your doctor before taking any dose that may not be the right for you.
