Ulm University’s Otorhinolaryngology Department conducted a study to determine the effect of peppermint inhalation on nasal congestion and temperature variations. The researchers at the German university found that the menthol from peppermint oil did not cause any alterations in the temperature.

It did give a cool sensation to the subjects, but it was not accompanied with any changes in temperature. The researchers came to the conclusion that the ingredient stimulated the cold receptors in the nasal passages, which gave the unique sensation.

They also found that 16 of the 18 subjects noticed improvement in breathing through the nose after inhaling menthol.

Another study was made by Israel’s Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, where the researchers studied the clinical benefits of fragrant essential oils in 60 subjects already suffering from infections of the upper respiratory system. They were given a spray of various aromatic essential oils that included peppermint oil. The results from the study showed that the spray helped in significantly improving the symptoms of the diseases.
